Fighting the Cold and Flu Naturally
Fighting the Cold and Flu Naturally
Do you have issues with the cold and flu in Altoona? It’s that time of year again. We wake up to nice crisp air, beautiful multi-colored falling leaves, and playoff baseball (go Cubs!) The first signs of fall are enjoyed by so many people for good reason but as a health professional I know what’s on the horizon-cold season. Here are a few ways to prevent the common cold and flu virus naturally, no matter your age.
Chiropractic Adjustments
When your body is not in proper alignment it can put stress on the nervous system which controls all systems in the body, including your immune system. Your immune system is responsible for fighting off all of the infections and viruses out there, including the common cold and flu. For health during the cold and flu season, it is essential for us to find the misaligned bones in your spine to clear the nervous system and prepare it to fight off any bug that tries to enter your system. Getting your whole body functioning at 100% is our goal and it starts with your spine! If you do happen to get a cold or the flu, it is important to get into the office to speed up recovery.
Exercise
Research shows that moderate amount of aerobic exercise may prevent the common cold. Also, if you do have a cold, research suggests to get up off the bed and do light exercise if your body can handle it. Just remember proper gym etiquette and wipe down your machines after use.
Healthy eating and drinking
Though the daily recommendation for water intake is half your body weight in ounces, when you are fighting off the cold or flu I advise my patients to increase that by a few ounces to help flush out the toxins trying to make you sick. In addition to water intake, consuming foods that boost your immune system also helps. Try foods like: garlic, citrus fruits, red peppers, mushrooms, leafy greens (the darker the green the better!), blueberries, dark chocolate (you’re welcome), brazil nuts (put them in a smoothie or in your morning oatmeal), carrots, sweet potatoes, sunflower seeds and oats.
Sleep
Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night because lack of sleep inhibits your ability to prevent and fight off colds and the flu.
Your body already holds within it the ability to fight common viruses like the cold and flu, if you think you are susceptible to them-call the office so I can assess what might be going on. Together we will keep you healthy this winter season!
